Warm Weather Leads to Dangerous Ice Fishing Conditions
KCRG – Cedar Rapids,IA,USA
(Cedar Rapids – KCRG) — The nice warm weather makes ice fishing less uncomfortable. But be careful, the ice is thinning.
Outside you can see water is starting to pond on top of the river and lake ice. Because it is the weekend and you can ice fish in your shirt sleeves, this may bring out the novice or first-time angler.
KCRG-TV9 spoke with Don Kline, a fisheries biologist for the Iowa D.N.R. He says you need a minimum of three inches of ice and that ice should look clear and crystal-like. If it looks dark, or honeycomb, the ice is not safe.
And ice melting at the shoreline or riverbank is a warning sign for that body of water. But be careful where streams feed into your area. The tributary will usually melt and lift the ice away from shore.
