The book reveals how for years, fishing tackle shop manager Tony Rixon has dominated the match lake circuit with his unique approach to the sport. But more interestingly, the book captivates his experiences and exploits as a boy, and follows, step by step, his ‘apprenticeship’ into the world of angling and his graduation into fully fledged match expert status.
At the outset, the book appears to be a charming and humorous account of the matchman’s initiation, but soon develops into an all-out information packed guide, in which Tony discloses what was until now, some of his highly ‘secretive’ methods.
The latter section of the book is primarily concerned with how to catch large nets of carp from typical match lakes, during highly competitive events. In a recent interview Tony said, “By revealing all my secret and highly successful methods and tactics, I realise I will be responsible for increasing my own competition, but that’s how I like it.”
He went on to say, “The future of match angling lies with commercial day ticket waters, which are freely accessible all over the country. But only the thinking angler, who not only outwits the fish but also other competitors, will emerge as supreme contender on any one of them.”
Coarse angling, better known as freshwater fishing is the undisputed, most popular single participant sport in the UK. ‘Match fishing’ which is becoming increasingly popular, better describes the competitive side to the sport.
