Texas fishing report Capt. Ben Wiley
February 19th, 2006 by Fishing admin
Much like the famed London landmark that bears his name, Capt. “Ben” Wiley and his party of two managed to ring in a great day of fishing action this past Thursday.
Wiley took Greg and Darla Keener to the Galveston jetties, where the party did a great job of reeling in five speckled trout, three flounder, a 40-pound bull red (released) and a 30-pound drum, also set free.
The action was on live shrimp and jigs.
Now, in case you didn’t know what I was referring to at the opening, it’s Big Ben, one of London’s best-known landmarks. Big Ben is a clock that’s minutely regulated with a stack of coins placed on a huge pendulum, thereby making it a superb timekeeper which has rarely stopped.
Oh, FYI the name Big Ben actually refers not to the clocktower itself, but to the 13-ton bell hung within.
In other area fishing news, Friday’s outstanding wahoo haul made waves in many area offshore circles, and one of those who took note of the event was a top Texas City angler.
Undeniably, when a haul catches the eye of longtime offshore angler Patrick Lemire, it just has to be special. And you know what? It was.
After Lemire read Friday’s report regarding a terrific wahoo haul, he called Reel Report and opened his dialogue with just one word, “Wow!”
Lemire was enthralled about a haul recorded by a party of local and area anglers that ventured to the Flower Gardens on Valentine’s Day that included something like 800 pounds of wahoo.
On the trip were Bert and Day Blume, Bill Roberts, Jack Beal, hosts Debbie and Ron Conway along with the leaders of the adventure, Capt. Danny Cantrell and mate Paul Bitner.
Debbie Conway became the trip’s leader when she decked a huge 84.6-pound wahoo, a specimen that several folks, Lemire included, said was among the largest they had seen in quite some time.
Beal decked a wahoo that tipped the scale at 76.3 pounds, and that beauty put him in first place in the ongoing Houston Big Game Fishing Club.
In all, the anglers decked 16 wahoo.
So, any time Lemire gives his thumbs-up to an offshore outing, you know that something special has happened. And this most recent excursion certainly filled that bill.
