Search for 14-year-old boy after fishing boat sinks off Islay
Scotsman – Edinburgh,Scotland,UK
MAJOR air and sea search was under way last night for a missing 14-year-old boy.
The teenager was in a small fishing boat with another boy when it sank about a quarter of a mile off Islay. The second boy swam ashore near Frenchman’s Rocks and raised the alarm shortly after 6pm.
Clyde coastguard vessels, local fishing boats, a Royal Navy helicopter from Prestwick and a coastguard helicopter from Stornoway joined the search.
A spokesman for Clyde Coastguard said: “The boys were in the fishing boat when it began taking on water.
“They both decided to swim for shore. The boy who made it said he turned around and saw his friend swimming behind him.
“But when he arrived on dry land he said he lost sight of his friend. The water at this time of year is freezing so it’s crucial we find him as soon as possible.”
