Pacific fishing industry proposes limits

Anchorage, AK, Dec. 28 (UPI) — Pollock fishermen off Alaska have proposed reducing their catch to address the growing problem of catching salmon in addition to their targeted species.
Fishermen in the region catch nearly 4 billion pounds of pollock, cod and other fish each year, but also throw overboard about 300 million pounds of fish “that are too big, too small, the wrong species or even … the wrong sex,” the Anchorage Daily news reported.
In recent years, boats targeting pollock have seen their unintentional take of king salmon nearly double and chum salmon increase sixfold, the newspaper reported. No one knows why the numbers are up, though some say there may just be more salmon in the water.
