WHAPLODE rod Neal Collishaw had an unforgettable first fishing trip to France – he broke a lake record with this monster 63lb mirror carp.
He and a colleague fished Lac Juvigny in the Marne Valley region, run by Chris Brasher.
Collishaw (32), a logistics and manufacturing manager at Worldwide Fruit Ltd in Spalding, said: “It’s a beautiful 12-acre lake with a good head of carp to chase.”
Two nights into the session and Collishaw had not seen any action.
He said: “Fish were being caught around the lake including a 50lb and a number of 40s but not so much as a bleep on my rods.”
By the sixth night he was starting to wonder about the possibility of a blank session.
Collishaw said: “At around 9pm my middle rod on the 9ft spot sprung into life. I was on it in a flash!
“With my UK PB being 25lb 5oz I knew I had latched into a good fish with it hugging the bottom hard and kiting left at a steady speed.
“Twenty minutes later and the fish rolled in front of me ready for netting.
“My first sight of the fish was its head – it was massive.
“Once on the unhooking mat I could see that I had landed a Marne Valley monster.
“By this time some of the lads on the lake had made it round to see the capture.
“Into the sling and on to the scales….63lb!
“At first I couldn’t believe it and requested another set of scales.
“We decided to ring Chris (Brasher) and at first he thought we were pulling his leg.”
