FRENCHMAN LAKE: Some nice-sized rainbows, 16-18 inches, are being caught off-shore at the dam. Float nightcrawlers or use rainbow glitter or orange Powerbait. trollers are going deep, about 25 feet down, with nightcrawlers and flashers. Troll slowly early in the morning or just before sunset. TRUCKEE RIVER: From Trout Creek to the state line, no bait allowed. Barbless flies and lures only, catch and release. The Truckee River is fishing well with temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s and flows at 281 c.f.s. at the outflow from Lake Tahoe, 297 c.f.s. past the town of Truckee and 596 c.f.s. down at Farad. Hatches will consist of PMDs, Caddis and Yellow Stone flies. Nymphing during the day will require fishing the faster water. Copper Johns in copper and chartreuse, PMD nymphs, and caddis pupae and emergers have all been effective patterns during the day. For those who prefer to throw dries, a Hopper with or without a dropper underneath has been taking some fish during the daytime hours. Dry action picks up dramatically in the evening hours by throwing Cutter’s E/C caddis, Burk’s yellow stone, Headlight Yellow Sally, along with a cast of other similar imitations. Nymphing in the evening hours has been good before and during surface action by throwing caddis emergers and similar imitations.

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: No bait allowed. Flows are low here at 54 c.f.s. and the temperature is in the mid 40s. This section has become technical because of the low flows. Small nymphs in PMD, Caddis, and Midge imitations have been producing. Dries include PMDs, Yellow Stoneflies, Pale Evening Duns and small dark Caddis. The farther up the system you go, the more selective the fish will be.

Recommended Flies: Nymphs: Rainbow Warriors, C-Johns, Mighty Mays, Prince Nymphs, WD-40s, Glo Bugs. Drys: March Browns, Baetis, PMDs, Midges, drakes, and Ants.Recommended Equipment: 9′ 4-5 wt., 3-4-5 x Tippet, 5 x Flouro. Mountain Hardware, Truckee (530) 587-4844.

STAMPEDE: Water temperature is in the high 40s to low 50s. Reservoir is mostly full, it was stocked on May 14, May 22 and June 25. Recommended: Flies, Buggers, Leeches, Hare’s Ear, PTs. Bait: Spoons, Spinners, Powerbait and Worms. Great Kokanee bite. Macks: Rapalas and J-Plugs. Recommended Equipment: 9-10-foot, 5-6 weight, 3x Tippet, and general spinning gear. BOCA: Conditions: Half-full, water temperature is in the high 50s to low 60s. It was stocked on May 14, May 22 and June 25. Fish the west side of the lake. Recommended Bait: Same as Stampede. Recommended Equipment: Same as Stampede.

PROSSER : Water temperature is in the low 60s, low water. It was stocked on May 14, May 22 and June 25. Concentrate near the inlets, good Smallmouth bite. Recommended Equipment: Same as Stampede. Mountain Hardware, Truckee (530) 587-4844.

EAST WALKER RIVER: The flow in the river is 112 c.f.s. Prince nymphs, WD-40s, flashback pheasant tails, sparkle caddis pupa, stimulators and e/c caddis. The drop in water flow has made for tougher fishing. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR: Fishing is better than it has been in several years. Trout are averaging 2-4 pounds with some 6-7 pounders showing up two or three times a week. SACRAMENTO RIVER : Water flows are 15,000 c.f.s. Trout fishing was good last week with many large bows up to 4-pounds being caught. Multiple hook-ups were common with many double and triple-hook ups side-drifting glo-bugs. Side-drifting small, hand-tied glo-bugs in various egg color patterns proved best early in the morning. Natural cured roe tipped with a Quickie puffball also worked well. Redding to Red Bluff has been the best area.

King salmon fishing re-opens July 16.

Salmon counts are ahead so far compared to last year, with 1,800 salmon already passing over the Diversion Dam. The opening will take place below the Red Bluff Diversion Dam.

LAKE SHASTA: Fishing is good. Catching nice king salmon with many limits. Salmon averaging 2-8 pounds, catching some in the 20-24-inch range. Catching a few trout here and there. FEATHER RIVER: Water flow is 8,500 c.f.s. Salmon fishing has slowed a bit despite better flows, but warmer water temperature. Best fishing from Oroville to Gridley. Anglers casting large No. 6 Blue Fox spinners from the bank around the outlet have caught a few salmon up to 30 pounds. Most fish have averaged 12-25 pounds.

COMINS LAKE: The lake is no longer overflowing and the water is slowly receding. Surface water temperature is 60 degrees. The spawn is over for rainbow trout and pike. Spawn has started for largemouth bass. Do not eat largemouth bass or northern pike from Comins Lake. Fishing has been fair to good for rainbow trout, largemouth bass and northern pike. Midge hatches are steady. Callabaetis hatch is just beginning and will peak in July. No dragonflies yet. Caddis hatch will start in mid-July. Best fly-fishing is before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m., except for the damsel hatch, which is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Large pike are seen daily. Sportsworld, Ely, 289-8886.

CAVE LAKE: Fishing has been fair to good for planter-sized (8-14-inches) rainbows. Fly-fishing is usually god mornings and evenings off the creek mouth. Most any of the peacock-headed flies will work. Sportsworld, Ely, 289-8886.

ILLIPAH RESERVOIR: Fishing has been good for 12-16-inch rainbows. Water level is dropping slowly. Fly-fishing has been the best it ha sbeen in several years. Sportsworld, Ely, 289-8886.

SUNNYSIDE: Surface water temperature is 70 degrees. Fishing has been good for bass and trout in Haymeadow and Cold Springs. Water level is good and weeds are not a problem yet. Fly-fishing should be excellent until Aug. 1. Bass are spawning. Sportsworld, Ely, 289-8886.

SILVER LAKE/CAPLES: Fishing has been pretty good for most of the spring and summer. Both dams at Caples are good locations for rainbows and cutthroats. Some large fish coming out, including a 14-pounder. Try Powerbait and worms. Woodfords Station, (530) 694-2930. Toll free 1-866-258-5949.

CROWLEY LAKE: The north arm of the lake is fishing well and the algae is not as thick as in other areas. Fish in 3-4 feet of water with a midge pupa such as Stevie’s Wonder gray/black under a large dry fly such as a stimulator or madam x. Steve at Performance Guide Service (760) 934-6101. . HOT CREEK: Water flow is 13 c.f.s. Time for 6x leaders and small flies. Use a dry/dropper combination. Try a yellow sally on top with a small (size 18-22) pheasant tail nymph or WD-40 as the dropper. Good caddis grab in the afternoon. Performance Guide Service (760) 934-6101.

UPPER OWENS RIVER: Water flow is 107 c.f.s. Not much different than last week. Above the Benton Crossing bridge try San Juan worms, glo-bugs, pheasant tails and sparkle caddis pupa and cover lots of water. Some surface action with yellow sallys and yellow stimulators. JUNE LOOP: Current flow in Rush Creek is 18 c.f.s. Try pheasant tail nymphs, flash back hares ears and black ants. The section of stream below Hwy 395 to Mono Lake providing some good dry fly opportunities with Royal Wullf’s Sierra brite dot’s and elk hair caddis. Silver Lake has been the best bet for float tubers. Black mohair leeches, olive matukas and zonkers. Fish along along the ledge parallel to the main road on the west side. UPPER TWIN LAKES: Nightcrawlers and Powerbait working well. Some big fish coming out, including a 6-pound rainbow caught with a worm. The water level is still high and creeks are running. Water temperature is in the high 50s. Mono Village Resort (760) 932-7071.

LAKE SABRINA: (Bishop, Calif.). Fishing was very good last week with lots of limits, most coming from the inlets where the anglers were using nightcrawlers, powerbait and salmon eggs. Trolling the shoreline with worms of flies such as a wooly bugger or matuka, or trolling deeper with lead core with a red dot frog lure at five colors snagged quite a few limits.
