More illegal fishing boats caught

More illegal fishing boats caught SIXTEEN illegal fishing boats have been caught in northern waters in the past three weeks.

During Operation Clearwater last month, 29 boats were seized.
Since the conclusion of the operation, Australian Customs Coastwatch, navy and fisheries officers have arrested 10 vessels and seized equipment from six.

This included the seizure of a sophisticated shark boat northwest of Darwin on May 7 which had two tonnes of fish, live crayfish and more than 50kg of shark fin on board.

“This is worth tens of thousands of dollars on the black market in Asia and again highlights the increasingly commercial nature of these illegal fishing operations,” Fisheries and Conservation Minister Senator Ian Macdonald said. – Australia
