Minnesota fishing report
Walleye fishing continues to be good late evenings and mornings using nightcrawlers and Lindy Rigs in 9 to 17 feet, according to Lake Vermilion Trading Co. Look for scattered weeds and hard bottom to hold fish. Muskie action remains mixed. The best bet is early and late in the day using bright-colored baits on rocks and weeds. Bass are easy pickings around docks and shore stations. Sunnies are thick in the weeds along with northerns.
2. Lake Mille Lacs
Fishing is very good, reports Johnson’s Portside. Walleyes are very active and hitting on the mudflats in 25 to 35 feet using leeches and nightcrawlers, and in the shallow reefs in 6 to 15 feet during the day and evening on crank baits. Smallmouth bass action has been fairly consistent on the reefs using rubber tube jigs. Muskie action is picking up, with some reports of fish over 50 inches hitting on dark bucktails and in the evening on topwater baits.
Koeps Pro Shop reports walleye fishing is picking up on Gull Lake using live bait rigs with minnows in 18 feet. Largemouth bass still are being caught on Jig ‘n’ Pig rigs or jig worms in 12 to 15 feet in North Long and the south end of Gull. Northerns have been hitting on Whitefish Lake using sucker rigs or large spinner rigs.
Chisago City area
Panfish have been biting on Chisago and Sunrise lakes using crappie minnows and leeches in the shallows and out to 12 feet, according to Frankie’s Bait. Walleye action has been slow but has picked up recently in South Center using leeches and fatheads in 17 to 24 feet. Area lakes are producing northerns on sucker minnows off the deeper weedlines in 10 to 12 feet and largemouth bass on plastics and scum frogs in the lily pads.
Catfish action in the Minnesota River on large sucker minnows and chubs fishing the deeper holes, according to The Bobber Shop. Some walleyes have been hitting in Washington Lake around Grassy Island using crankbaits in 20 to 22 feet of water suspended in 12 feet. Washington also has been producing sunfish in 10 to 12 feet on small jigs with wax worms or crappie minnows. Large northerns are being caught in Little Jefferson using spoons and spinner baits.
Longville Bait reports northern action on Leech Lake using sucker minnows. Largemouth bass and northerns have been hitting in Woman Lake on worms and fathead minnows. Walleye fishing has been slow in the area. Some action late evening using worms. Crappies have been hitting in area lakes on minnows and tube jigs in 6 to 10 feet.
