LIFEBOAT crew in Margate were launched early this morning to assist a fishing trawler which ran into trouble off the coast of north Kent.
The 8.5m vessel, contacted Thames coastguard at Walton-on-Naze in Essex after it ran aground on the Hook Sands off Birchington and lost its rudder.
Margate’s all-weather lifeboat, the Leonard Kent, was tasked with carrying out a rescue of the trawler and arrived at the scene at around 1.30am this morning (Tuesday).
RNLI crews were able to tow the fishing vessel and its two crew members into deeper water and it was then taken in tow to Whitstable harbour.
The Leonard Kent then made the return journey to Margate and was available for service again at 5.30am.
