Lake Erie : The best walleye bite in decades continues with big numbers coming into 45 to 50 feet of water — although a few are still as shallow as 28 feet — while some bigger ones are as deep as 60 to 70 feet. Poor Richard’s weighed a couple of 11-plus pound walleyes this week with the majority being 17 to 22 inches in length. Leaders of the Poor Richard’s contest to benefit S.O.N.S. (Save Our Native Species) of Lake Erie are Gene Crawford of Mechanicsburg with a 10-pound 2-ounce 31-inch walleye, and Jim Schwarz of Aliquippa with a 1-pound 4-ounce 13-inch perch. The perch bite remains inconsistent, but overall slow. Decent sizes are reported in 47 feet off Trout and Godfrey runs, and in 52 feet north of Walnut Creek. Clarence Ungerman, 86, with sons John and Ed, and grandsons Edward and Jeffrey caught a 5-pound smallmouth bass, walleyes up to 8 pounds, and jumbo perch in 50 feet just northeast of the Walnut launch. The walleyes came on spoons and crawler harnesses, while the perch hit on emerald shiners.
