Japan to investigate illegal fishing concerns The Japanese Embassy in Canberra says it will investigate whether one of its country’s boats is illegally taking patagonian toothfish from the Southern Ocean.
Australian Customs officers have been monitoring the Ryoan Maru 5 and two other Japanese flagged vessels in international waters between Antarctica and Heard and McDonald Islands.
The area is covered by an international convention aimed at protecting marine life near Antarctica.
The Embassy’s first secretary says there is no need for customs officers to board the boats because the Japanese Government will investigate and report back to Australia.
He says the boats are equipped to fish for tuna, not toothfish
