Fishers ready to take action to stop illegal fishing – North Queensland fishing operators are frustrated by illegal fishing in their waters and say they are prepared to take matters into their own hands.
Fishermen from the Gulf of Carpentaria have met Federal Fisheries Minister Ian Macdonald, suggesting they provide surveillance in the Gulf when the waters are closed during the summer months.
Fisherman Gary Ward says locals want illegal fishing stopped.
“This year we’ve had a few encounters with these people but we certainly are not going to put up with it for another year,” he said.
“I mean while we’re out there, it’s fine we can report them but we’re not going to go through another closed season like this one without some action from ourselves, whether our association or our members have got to do the surveillance ourselves and clean these people up we will.”
Senator Macdonald says he will consider the proposal but would insist trained Fisheries or Customs officials be on board local boats
