Houston fishing
Offshore
Moderate southeasterly wind provided fishable but choppy conditions. Seas were in the 3- to 4-foot range at the buoy 60 miles south of Freeport. Water clarity was good.
The party boat, Capt. John, had a good day on red snapper Sunday. A group of 82 anglers boxed 218 fish, topped by 20 between 12 and 18 pounds. The boat fished over rocks and wrecks approximately 50 miles southeast of Galveston. Most of the snapper were caught on cut squid, whole sardines and heavy jigs.
Beachfront
Surf was small and sandy green. Tides were running at near-normal levels and inshore water readings rose to 77 degrees. Recent catches from Galveston Fishing Pier included gafftop catfish, sand trout, small sharks, redfish and flounder.
Lake Amistad
Black bass were fair to good in 5- to 15-foot water, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Soft plastics, crankbaits and lipless swimming baits were effective off points and humps. A 13.58-pound fish was caught April 19, the 29th ShareLunker (13-pound minimum) of the season. The 27.25-inch fish came from 10-foot water. Amistad has four ShareLunker entries, trailing Lake Fork (five) and Lake Alan Henry (7). The ShareLunker hatchery program ends Sunday.
Lake Livingston
Black bass remained fair, Kickapoo Marina reported. Fish were taking spinnerbaits, shallow-running crankbaits and lipless swimming plugs over brush and logs near channels. Crappie were fair on live minnows over brush and off docks, and white bass were fair on spoons over main-lake humps. The lake remained about four feet below pool with adequate clarity in many areas. The dam was releasing 1,100 cubic feet of water per second.
Houston County Reservoir
Black bass were fair to good on Texas-rigged soft plastics and spinnerbaits over brush and grass in 4- to 12-foot water. Topwater plugs and floating/diving plugs produced occasional fish early and late, especially on cloudy days. Crappie were reliable on live shiners over brush. The lake was about six inches above pool and stained in some areas.
