Foreign fishing boat found in Cape York
ABC Online – Australia
Customs officers will investigate a foreign fishing boat found at a remote river mouth on western Cape York Peninsula.
People at a local fishing camp at the Kendall River, north of Pormpuraaw in far north Queensland, reported the boat and its 10 occupants to police yesterday afternoon.
The group, believed to be Indonesian fishermen, reportedly looked tired and hungry.
Customs spokesman Simon Latimer says the recent cyclone may have blown the boat off course.
“Our Customs patrol boat that was in the Gulf of Carpentaria … was itself forced to take shelter and it is quite possible that the crew of this fishing boat have been forced to take shelter from the cyclone,” he said.
Mr Latimer says Customs officers will travel to the remote area by helicopter this morning.
