Anglers line up move for buy-out of fishing rights
ANGLERS are considering a community buy-out of fishing rights on a Highland river.
Fort William Angling Association has called a public meeting for next Wednesday to discuss the proposed sale of the River Nevis rights.
It has held the tenancy for more than a century, and Kevin Dignan, the secretary of the bid team, said the association believed that it must come under local control.
“The Nevis is the only salmon and sea trout fishing available locally on a day-ticket basis. We also issue weekly and family tickets and the river is regularly fished throughout the season.
“We believe it’s a fundamentally important amenity for Fort William which must be retained … if that involves a community buy-out then that’s what we’re determined to do with, we hope, the full support of the community.”
