Fishing report RIVERS AND STREAMS
Trinity: Steelhead action had improved upstream of the North Fork until flows were increased from Lewiston Dam to over 5,000 cubic feet per second to reduce the level of Trinity Lake for flood control. This move effectively put the river out of commission yet again. Jack Trout (530) 926-4540, Trinity Fly Shop (530) 623-6757, Brady’s Sport Shop (530) 623-3121.
Upper Sacramento: Not much to report, though conditions are probably similar to those on the Trinity and Klamath. Jack Trout (530) 926-4540, The Fly Shop (530) 222-3555, Ron Rabun Flyfishing (800) 359-3746, San Jose Fly Shop (408) 377-3132.
Feather: Steelhead and the anglers hunting them were not deterred by muddy flows coming down the “low flow section” last week, some days worse than others. Even fly anglers managed to get in on the action, hooking fish 4-5 pounds with green caddis nymphs at Bed Rock above the Highway 70 bridge. Up the Creek Guide Service (530) 347-3511.
Klamath: Although the release from Iron Gate Dam was reduced to a little over 5,000 cfs from the previous week’s 8,600 cfs, the river was still too high and off-color for anything close to decent angling. The flow in Seiad Valley is double that below Iron Gate, and it doubles again near Happy Camp. Marble Mountain Ranch (800) KLA-MATH.
Lower Sacramento: Sunday was the last day for salmon angling on the Sacramento. Salmon season will reopen July 16. Anglers seeking trout would be advised to give the high flows some time to drop. Water levels peak at 20,000 cfs and bottom out around 5,000 cfs. The key is for flows to hold constant for a few days so fish can get settled. However, recent trout action was surprisingly good between Posse Grounds and Bonneview despite the high flows. Fish bite on San Juan worms, golden stones, alevin patterns and Glo-Bugs. Jack Trout (530) 926-4540, Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing (800) 670-4448, Hank Mautz Professional Guide Service (800) 355-3113, San Jose Fly Shop (408) 377-3132, T-N-T Sportfishing (530) 244-6204.
LAKES
Trout plants: The Department of Fish and Game has scheduled the following lakes to be restocked in the coming week with catchable-size trout from DFG hatcheries: Bon Tempe (Marin County), El Estero (Monterey), Hennessey (Napa) and Pinto (Santa Cruz). DFG (707) 944-5581, online: www.dfg.ca.gov/fishplant/ index.html.
• The East Bay Regional Park District has scheduled the following lakes to be restocked with rainbow trout averaging over a half-pound each by Monday: Del Valle (1,000 pounds), Chabot (500), Shadow Cliffs (750), Quarry Lakes (1,000), Contra Loma (500), Temescal (250). EBRPD 562-PARK (works in any area code), online: www.ebparks.org.
Davis: Conditions at the lake change weekly. Tuesday, the water was about 50 percent ice-free, including a large area around Mallard Cove, which is fishable most days depending on the wind. One angler reported five bites and three fish up to 4 1/2 pounds last week, attributing the success to a four-pound test line and patience. The ice that covers the balance of the lake is thin and will not support ice-fishing traffic. The east-side road is open down to the entrance to Mallard Cove. Four-wheel drive is suggested from the blacktop down to the lake. Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251.
San Luis Reservoir/O’Neill Forebay: Ly’s Sporting & Fishing Goods (408) 629-9644.
SANTA CLARA COUNTY
Trout plants: The Department of Fish and Game has scheduled Cunningham and Sandy Wool lakes to be restocked in the coming week with catchable-size trout from their hatcheries. DFG (707) 944-5581, online: www.dfg.ca.gov/fishplant/ index.html.
Campbell Perc Ponds: Trout action is good after recent plants.
Calero: The water remains high and muddy, but black bass to five pounds bite on craw-dad-colored crank baits and jigs.
Anderson: Black bass bite on jigs, Hula grubs and drop shots on the main lake. One group of anglers reported 5-10 fish per rod from 1 to 2 pounds. The south end is too muddy to be fishable.
Coyote Discount Bait and Tackle (408) 463-0711, Reed’s Sport Shop (408) 926-3020, Ly’s Sporting & Fishing Goods (408) 629-9644, Fisherman’s Warehouse (408) 873-0113, Mel Cotton’s (408) 287-5994. Fly-fishing only: San Jose Fly Shop (408) 377-3132.
BAY & DELTA
Isleton: Blue skies have returned, but the Delta is still laden with debris and the water remains muddy with temperatures ranging from 48 to 51 degrees. Angling has been tough for the past three weeks, though the occasional sturgeon will bite on a jig cast from a boat on the middle river. Riverside Bait (916) 777-6662.
Benicia: Next week should bring daytime outgoing tides, which would drastically improve conditions. An evening trip to Buoy 9 early this week produced six sturgeon, four keepers and a couple of shakers. Grass shrimp is virtually impossible to find, so anglers should stick to ghost shrimp, mud shrimp, pile worms and eel. One angler hooked a 74-inch sturgeon Tuesday night in the Ozol area between the pier and the Martinez Marina. A few striped bass to 15 pounds bite off First Street, and a few more by the Benicia Bridge. Benicia Bait and Tackle. (707) 745-4921.
San Pablo Bay: Bad weather made for a slow weekend, but calm waters and slow incoming tides returned Monday to help anglers catch limits of sturgeon in the area around Buoy 5. A party boat reported limits for all, including a 50-pound sturgeon hooked and landed by a 90-year-old angler. A few stripers and some sturgeon can be caught below the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Ghost shrimp and Lamprey eel remain the baits of choice. Loch Lomond Bait Shop (415) 456-0321.
San Francisco Bay: Sturgeon to 80 pounds and 65 inches bite on herring or ghost shrimp around Hunter’s Point and anywhere else herring spawn. A Monday trip returned with a fish per rod for three anglers. Emeryville Sportfishing (510) 654-6040, Berkeley Marina Sportfishing (510) 849-3333, Bass Tub (415) 456-9055, Miss Farallones (925) 689-0900, Oyster Point Bait & Tackle Marina (650) 589-FISH.
OCEAN
San Francisco: Bad weather postponed Dungeness crab and sand dab combination trips last weekend, but they should resume Friday and continue through Sunday. Emeryville Sportfishing has a squid trip planned for Friday as well. Emeryville Sportfishing (510) 654-6040, Berkeley Marina Sportfishing (510) 849-3333.
Pacifica: No report is available for this week. The bait shop remains closed. Rusty Hook (650) 355-8303.
Half Moon Bay: Most boats are in dry dock for repairs. Regular crab and dab combo trips will resume in February, weather permitting. Huck Finn Sportfishing (800) 572-2934.
Santa Cruz: Sand dabs are the only thing biting on the ocean, but a decided lack of interest on the part of anglers keeps boats in the harbor. However, whale-watching season is in full swing, and plenty of trips are available. Stagnero’s (831) 427-0230; Santa Cruz Sportfishing (831) 426-4690.
Monterey: Sand dabs, mackerel and crab bite on the bay for any anglers willing to make the trek. More trips are planned for this weekend. Chris’ Fishing Trips (831) 375-5951, Randy’s Fishing Trips (831) 372-7440.
