ANGLERS in Wales are extremely fortunate in that within its hills and vales are some superb rivers and lakes offering a huge variety of fishing opportunities. One can truly say that each region is extremely rich in quality fishing – providing the conditions are right.
Gwynedd is renowned for its sewin rivers with the Dyfi and Conwy considered two of the big five Welsh sewin rivers. Other lesser sewin rivers like the Seiont, Dwyfor, Mawddach and Glaslyn also offer some interesting and enjoyable fishing. Llyn Trawsfynydd and the picturesque Talyllyn cater for stillwater fishers and there are many highland lakes that provide good wild brown trout fishing.
Clwyd has the outstanding river Dee, which is acknowledged as one of the most controlled rivers in Europe with no less than four major stillwaters in its catchment area and is popular with salmon and grayling fishers. High up on Denbigh moors is Llyn Brenig, the finest reservoir in the UK for top-of-the-water-fishing.
Mid Wales boasts the river Teifi – the queen of Welsh rivers – and a major sewin, salmon and trout river. It also has the Aeron, the Ystwyth and the Rheidol. Stillwater fisheries like Teifi Pools, Nantymoch, Dinas and Aberystwyth’s nine lakes offer great trout fishing. Hidden away in the hills of the region is Clywedog reservoir – home of the biggest trout in Wales and also the attractive reservoirs of the Elan Valley.
The South West Region (Dyfed) has the outstanding river Towy with its top quality sewin fishing and lower down the two Cleddau rivers and the Nevern each giving Pembrokeshire anglers some wonderful river fishing. In the centre of the region is Llysyfran.
