fishing in the gulf
March 21st, 2006 by Fishing admin
The warm weather has enhanced the appetites of many fish in the gulf. We recently experienced better action while grouper fishing at many depths. Mangrove snapper were also eager to grab the live baits we dropped.
Bait schools are starting to show at all depths, allowing us to fill the live wells with wide varieties. Pinfish, grunts, sardines and threadfin herring have been the most abundant baits.
Kingfish will be arriving this week, first showing in depths of 30-50 feet. A few reports have trickled in from these areas.
Offshore action for amberjacks was exciting last week. We hooked numerous fish in the 40- to 50-pound class while drifting over the offshore springs about 60 miles out. Many of these jacks will move closer to shore this month. Expect to find them on many of the wrecks in 80-100 feet.
A few cobias have started to mingle with the schools of amberjacks. We saw a 40-pound cobia brought to the dock Saturday. These game fish will start to show on inshore artificial reefs. By the end of the month, your options will be endless.
