Offshore

Southeast wind gusting to 20 mph downgraded prospects. Seas were rough and choppy. Prior to the wind, fishing was good. The party boat, New Buccaneer, reported that a recent 12-hour trip boxed 135 red snapper to 14 pounds and 23 kingfish to 20 pounds. A 50-pound ling topped the day. The boat fished approximately 55 miles southeast of Galveston.

Beachfront

Surf was rough and sandy to sandy-green under gusting onshore wind. Influxes of sargassum weed impacted some areas. Speckled trout were fair at night from piers. Prior to the wind, trout and redfish were reliable along the Galveston Jetties for anchored boaters “free shrimping” close to the rocks.

Galveston Bay complex

Increasing wind downgraded prospects on the primary bays. Deeper shell pads in lower Trinity Bay, lower East Bay, and Galveston Bay were good earlier in the week for trout on soft plastics and live shrimp fished near bottom during moving tides. Better fish were in the 3- to 5-pound class. Spoil banks along the Houston Ship Channel near the Texas City Dike were fair for trout on live shrimp and croaker.

Lake Rayburn

Black bass were fair to good on topwater plugs early over flooded grass and along edges of mats. Shaded banks prolonged the morning activity on clear days. Short soft-plastic jerkbaits were effective along weed-bed edges. Scattered surface-schooling action occurred during afternoon hours.

Lake Conroe

White bass were good over main-lake humps. Trollers caught fish on spoons behind deep-diving crankbaits. Early mornings were productive. Catfish were fair to good over baited holes in 15- to 20-foot water along the main river channel. Crappie were fair on live minnows over brush piles in similar depths. Bream were steady along edges of weed beds in coves.

Choke Canyon Reservoir

Black bass were good early on spinnerbaits and soft jerkbaits off points in 4- to 10-foot water. Deeper fish were taking Carolina-rigged plastics and crankbaits. White bass were good on jigging spoons along channels and off primary points. Crappie were reliable on small jigs tipped with minnows over brush. Channel and blue catfish were good on prepared baits and cut shad in channels.
