Ellison backs role for fishers in illegal fishing fight
The Federal Customs Minister has welcomed calls for commercial fishing operators to play a bigger role in trying to combat illegal fishing in Australian waters.
Last week, the Australian Seafood Industry Council suggested Australian boats could help Customs identify illegal operators through satellite technology.
Federal Customs Minister Chris Ellison says the current system would need to be extended so all Australian fishing vessels could be easily identified.
“I think there is a role for commercial fishing to assist us,” he said.
“We do have our vessel monitoring system which relates to Australian registered vessels, but those are vessels that have Commonwealth licences.
“We have to extend that further to other Australian vessels so at least we know that when we do encounter a vessel, it is an Australian vessel.”
