Rain and big winds are in the forecast and anglers will have to keep an eye on the weather, especially the walleye and perch fishermen working the frigid near-shore waters of Lake Erie. After a relatively balmy week, thermal gear will again be in fashion.

The walleye fishermen heading to the piers and breakwalls after dark should be able to continue catching big fish, though the cold weather will make the fishing more difficult. Gale force winds are in the forecast, but are expected to arrive from the southwest and might not muddy the waters and spoil the fishing. Pier fishermen won’t have any problems making long casts.

Boat fishermen who have been trolling near-shore waters should be especially cautious as the winds pick up.

Walleye have been reported caught from the Cleveland Lakefront State Park piers, especially East 72nd St., and from the Wildwood Park piers. Walleye are also being caught from the Lorain area breakwalls and the Sandusky, Huron, Lakeside and Catawba Island state park piers. Anglers are trolling the outer breakwalls, Gold Coast and Bratenahl areas around Cleveland, and the productive stretch between Huron and Vermilion.

The steelhead trout fishing has been challenging, with crowds of anglers wading the rivers and streams this week. The trout fishing has become increasingly difficult as the rivers have settled and are low and clear. Rain this weekend should bring fresh runs of trout up the streams. Steelhead trout are crowding the river mouths, including the Rocky River, waiting for high water to allow them to run up the rivers.

Crappies have been caught at Mosquito Lake. Anglers are casting jig-minnow combos in 7 to 8 feet of water along the causeway and off the points for crappies and catching a few walleyes, as well. Some big trout recently stocked at Punderson Lake in Geauga County are still being caught.
