Beijing, China, Jan. 3 (UPI) — China said it plans to impose strict controls on the number of boats in its fishing fleet and closely monitor the industry to prevent stock depletion.
China Radio International Monday quoted a senior official with the Ministry of Agriculture as saying the country would try to stop over fishing, while ensuring stable development of the industry and safeguarding livelihoods.
Liu Zheng, deputy director of the ministry’s Department of Fisheries, was quoted saying China would impose strict controls on the number of fishing boats plus standardize their operations by granting fishing licenses.
Liu stressed the importance of adhering to rules that mandate non-fishing periods as well as the regular release of farmed fish to guarantee sustainable development of China’s fishing industry
