Commercial fishermen have welcomed an agreement between Australia and Indonesia to take part in joint navy patrols to stop illegal fishing in Australia’s northern waters.
State and territory fisheries ministers have also committed to eight new measures to deter illegal fishermen, including a review of penalties and more research.

Russian authorities seized four Japanese fishing boats in disputed waters off Russia’s Far East over alleged poaching, officials and news reports said on Saturday.

More than £1m of taxpayers money was wasted in the decommissioning of NI trawlers, according to a report.
The Audit Office criticised how the Department of Agriculture ran three schemes and the way it decided which boats would be grant-aided.

THE Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture is pushing to have fishing licences suspended for five years to allow for the resuscitation of the island’s over-fished reef areas.

Commercial salmon trollers in Oregon will be able to catch about 12,000 more chinook salmon than expected this season if they fish at the mouths of 10 Oregon rivers.
