World Carp Champion Steve Briggs, and ” The Carp Show ” host Rob Hughes spent the weekend fishing on the St. Lawrence River. They said they expect carp fishing to become more popular in the North Country, once people know how easy it is to get started. They said the first thing to do, is find the fish.

“You can’t catch them if you can’t find them first,” said Briggs.

“Just drive around for a half an hour or an hour. Just looking at the water and normally the carp will show themselves. So if you get to areas that look pretty good, you just look and you’ll see the fish jumping,” said Hughes.

Next, bait your line with brightly colored “boilies,” the favorite food of carp, and cast your line.

Carp fishing has been a popular sport in Europe for years. Now it’s making waves along the St. Lawrence River thanks to last summer’s World Carp Championship. But, News 10 Now’s Cait McVey tells us you don’t need to be a professional to get started this season. The crew from “Extreme Carp,” a British angling series, said anyone who can pick up a rod can pick up the sport.

“After you cast out, you put your rod on something called a bite indicator. And basically it just sits there, and as soon as a fish pulls the line, then it makes a noise, it beeps, so you know something is happening,” said Hughes.

Once your rod is set, you can sit back and relax until you get a bite. But be ready because Briggs said these fish really put up a fight.

“It’s explosive power, that’s the thing with them. Sometimes they seem like they’re coming in easy and suddenly they turn around and power off. If you’re not ready for them, you know you have to set the clutch on the reel and give line, otherwise, well I’ve had rods snap,” Briggs said.

These anglers said once you get the hang of it, you’ll be reeling in the big fish in no time. And they said you can get started anytime this summer, because carp season extends well into the fall.

Later this week, the “Extreme Carp” crew will be headed to Oswego for some carp fishing on Lake Ontario.
