8/24/14 Deep Sea Fishing in August

It was another pretty week with good weather here at Bud n’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada, Florida. Yesterday was a really busy day where almost every deep sea charter fishing boat got out, and everybody had action with fish! A few days back the mahi bite slowed down, but then it turned right back on again for many of the boats the last couple days. I think during the upcoming weeks we will see that, with some really good days with lots of action and then some slow days mixed in. The majority of the fish have been schoolies with a few gaffers mixed in, and then there has been a few slammers combined amongst the fleet. You never know when that big 40 lb bull is gonna swim up! The mahi fishing usually isn’t quite as consistent when we get into September and October, but the good news is that the blackfin tuna have showed up in big numbers on the humps! There’s been plenty of “footballs” from 3 – 10 lbs, with a couple big ones over 20 lbs mixed in. We use light tackle for the tuna, so even a 10 lb blackfin on a 15 lb spinning rod puts up a great fight! A few boats got in on the daytime swordfish action the past few days as well, and the Fall is really my favorite time of year for them! We caught two fish my last trip on the Bn’M II which was a few days back, the biggest at 120 lbs, and both the Bn’M and Cloud Nine each got fish this week. Back on the reef there’s been a mix of yellowtail, mangrove, and mutton snapper. The boats that found current and dirtier water have been doing the best. There’s also been some fish on the wrecks outside the reef. The Redfish caught a nice suprise african pompano yesterday while live baiting. We have plenty of open charter boats the next few weeks since the busy season of people is winding down, so give us a call and get out fishing when there’s not some many other boats out there! 305 664 2461!
