Fishing comp hooks big crowds Organisers of the Boyne Tannum Hook-Up say it is just one event that brings millions of dollars to the local economy over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
Darryl Branthwaite says up to 9,000 people gathered at Boyne Island’s Bray Park each day for the fishing competition and prize giveaways.
Mr Branthwaite says in conjunction with other events in the region over the weekend, millions of dollars is injected into the region via fuel, accommodation, food and alcohol.
“Apart from all that, a lot of people still come back to the area and they buy a bit of property or might come back to the area for a holiday,” he said.
“Because in the past, Boyne Tannum and probably the Gladstone region has been seen as a stop-over point rather than a destination, but [during] the Queen’s Birthday weekend it’s the Gladstone region’s time because we’ve got so many things on.”
