Boost for the fishing industry

KUALA LUMPUR: Companies that are financially sound and with know-how in the fishing industry will be invited to form a national consortium to help increase the nation’s deep-sea fishing yield.

Interested parties would also have to be involved in the supply chain, such as producing and marketing fish-based products, said Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The planned National Fisheries Consortium would be launched by the end of the year and invitations to these companies would be issued later this month, he said.

Muhyiddin had earlier chaired a meeting with officers from the various government agencies and representatives of Affin Bank Bhd, the project’s financial and corporate consultants.

“Priority will be given to companies which have financial credibility and a general know-how of the fishing industry,” he added.

On the nation’s deep-sea fishing industry, Muhyiddin said there was a dire need to rejuvenate it by getting local fishermen directly involved.

“We believe we can increase the deep-sea fishing yields by three to four times if fishing activities were wholly carried out by Malaysians,” he said, adding that the fishing industry currently contributed RM5bil annually to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
