Beachfront FISHING REPORT

FISHING REPORT Beachfront Recent catches from the 61st Street Pier included gafftop catfish to 6 1/2 pounds, plus scattered speckled trout, drum, redfish and small sharks.

Surfside Jetty was holding fishable clarity on the Gulf side, and rock walkers caught speckled trout and Spanish mackerel on live bait. Galveston Jetties were reliable for redfish on live shrimp free-lined near bottom.

Lake Calcasieu

Stable southeast wind improved fishing, reported Hackberry Rod and Gun Club. Keith Ponsonby of Spring recently caught a 31-inch trout that weighed 9 pounds, 14 ounces. Guide Mark Atwell reported good fishing on redfish in marsh lakes off Calcasieu. Topwater plugs were effective on fish tailing under birds.

Lake Conroe

Crappie fishing was fair to good over brushpiles in 14- to 18-foot water, reported guide Butch Terpe. Anglers using minnows and jigs boxed 20 to 30 crappie per half-day trip, with the best fish in the 13- to 14-class. Occasional catfish, bass and bream were caught over the brush. Guide Debby Watson reported good white bass fishing off main-lake points in 20- to 25-foot water. One-ounce jigging spoons were effective. Scattered hybrid bass were mixed with the whites.

Lake Amistad

Black bass were good, reported guide Ray Hanselman. Fish were holding over main-lake grass flats and edges of drop-offs and taking topwater plugs, drop-shot rigs and crankbaits. A recent tournament was won with five fish totaling 27 pounds; according to Hanselman all were caught on topwaters.

Lake Livingston

Black bass remained fair on Texas-rigged plastics fished along brushy drop-offs in creeks and coves, reported Kickapoo Marina. White bass were good on jigging spoons over main-lake humps and roads, wind permitting. Crappie were fair on minnows in creeks.
