Anglers found on floating ice

ABOUT 20 Russian anglers floating on a chunk of ice in the Gulf of Finland were rescued today by boat and helicopter, the local emergencies ministry said.
The group, who included a woman, had ventured onto the frozen sea in the Kirovsk region, west of Russia’s second city Saint Petersburg.
Despite the authorities’ warnings, fishing through a hole in the ice is a popular pastime in Russia and people often walk far across the frozen surfaces of lakes and the sea, at the risk of being cast adrift.
